The chromium(III) carbonate is produced preferably by bringing an aqueous solution of a carbonic acid salt into contact with an aqueous solution containing trivalent chromium under such conditions that the reaction fluid temperature falls within the range of 0 DEG C to lower than 50 DEG C and at a pH of 6 to 12. It is preferable that the chromium(III) carbonate is completely dissolved within 30 minutes when the chromium(III) carbonate in an amount corresponding to one gram of Cr is added at 25 DEG C to one liter of an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution having a pH of 0.2. The chromium(III) carbonate exhibits an L* value of 50 to 70, an a* value of -4 to -2, and a b* value of -10 to -7, each value being defined in the L*a*b* color system (JIS Z8729).
